How long can you store diesel fuel? What the big oil companies say.

We receive this question often at Algae-X International and surprisingly, it has no solid answer.

Here’s what the big oil companies say:

So how long can you store diesel fuel? Long term diesel fuel storage apparently depends on how much air is exposed, how much water is in the fuel storage tank, and how much algae will deteriorate the fuel. While there is no definite timeline you can stamp on the fuel like a “freshness date”, you can do the following to elongate the life-cycle of your stored diesel:

1)   Try and keep contaminates such as water and air out of your storage tanks

2)   Cycle your fuel often. Use a fuel polishing system to separate the water and filter out contaminates

System Spotlight: TC-1000 / TC-3000 On Board Tank Cleaning System

The TC is a High Capacity On-Board Tank Cleaning and Fuel Transfer System that reconditions stabilizes and decontaminates fuel. It efficiently removes water, sludge and sediments that naturally accumulate in tanks. The TC cleans tanks and restores fuel to its “Clear & Bright” condition.

The system can be easily installed on existing vessels or engineered into new construction. It provides the dual capability of fuel polishing and fuel transfer, eliminating fuel “algae” issues, clogged filters and tank sludge. “Optimal Fuel Quality for Peak Engine Performance and Reliability”

Stage 1: 

The separator/coalescer removes water and particulate that is easily drained by opening the valve on the bottom of the separator.

Stage 2: 

The ALGAE-X® Fuel Conditioner reconditions and stabilizes the fuel, reversing the process of fuel deterioration and buildup of tank sludge.

Stage 3:

The industrial type water block fine filter removes emulsified water and very fine solids down to 3 microns.

ALGAE-X® TC Systems are built with industrial quality components, connected with Stainless Steel plumbing and mounted on a heavy-duty white powder coated plate. A pressure gauge is installed on the spin-on filter head to ensure optimal filter usage. The stainless steel liquid filled vacuum gauge monitors the separator and protects the pump.

ALGAE-X® Fuel Catalyst (AFC-705) The use of AFC-705 is recommended as a standard part of any tank cleaning procedure, to more rapidly and efficiently decontaminate and clean the entire fuel system, and remove sludge, slime and bio-fouling from tank walls and baffles. AFC-705 is a full spectrum fuel conditioner containing combustion catalyst, surfactant, detergent, dispersant, corrosion inhibitor, lubricity enhancers and fuel stabilizer that eliminates the need for expensive toxic biocides.

TC Options: Digital Flow Meter, Water Sensor Alarm. Larger capacity fuel polishing, tank cleaning and fuel transfer systems are available.

FPS Fuel Polishing & Transfer Systems @ Ft. Lauderdale

The Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show is just around the corner, and I thought of giving you a sneak peek at some of our top Fuel Management Systems that are being packed for display at the show. The FPS Fuel Polishing & Transfer Systems are going to be featured prominently at the show seeing as their compact design is suitable for keeping fuel onboard polished in cramped engine spaces.

The FPS-SX & MX Fuel Polsihing & Transfer System

The FPS SX Fuel Polishing & Transfer System is equipped with a three (or optionally four) stage water removal and particulate filtration. They reverse fuel deterioration, polymerization to submicron levels, decontaminating, cleaning and stabilizing your fuel. The FPS SX-R Fuel Polishing & Transfer System is equipped with the same three or four stage water removal and particulate filtration, but instead of a Separ water filter, the SX-R one is a Racor water filter & separator.

The FPS MX Fuel Polishing & Transfer System is equipped with three or four stage water removal and particulate filtration, and offers up to 250 GPH. This system reverses fuel deterioration, submicron level polymerization, decontaminates and cleans all the stored fuel onboard with a slightly larger footprint than the FPS-SX.

The FPS-DX-LD Fuel Polishing & Transfer System

The SMART FPS-DX-LD is the premier automated fuel polishing and transfer system in the DX line. Weighing only 20 Lbs, this system is uniquely suited to guaranty the reliability of engines onboard marine vessels, as well as, generators and pump stations that operate in remote and unmanned locations.
