How long can you store diesel fuel? What the big oil companies say.

We receive this question often at Algae-X International and surprisingly, it has no solid answer.

Here’s what the big oil companies say:

Chevron Stored Fuel Advice

BP Stored Fuel Shelf Life Advice

Exxon Mobile long term stored fuel shelf life advice

Shell Oil Stored Diesel Fuel Advice

So how long can you store diesel fuel? Long term diesel fuel storage apparently depends on how much air is exposed, how much water is in the fuel storage tank, and how much algae will deteriorate the fuel. While there is no definite timeline you can stamp on the fuel like a “freshness date”, you can do the following to elongate the life-cycle of your stored diesel:

1)   Try and keep contaminates such as water and air out of your storage tanks

2)   Cycle your fuel often. Use a fuel polishing system to separate the water and filter out contaminates

Algae-X has developed several fuel systems to polish your fuel, safely transfer your fuel, and clean your fuel storage tanks to help you elongate the shelf life of your stored fuel. We even have automated fuel filtration and separation systems that will cycle the fuel periodically for you.

Good 411: Water Contamination in Fuel: Cause and Effect

The American Filtration & Separations Society has a great article on Water Contamination in Fuel: Cause and Effect by Dr. Saru Dawar at Cummins Filtration.

Typical Interfacial TensionWhat is the impact of the water contaminating the fuel? Microbial growth and bio-degradation of diesel fuel can cause filter plugging and more serious damages within the engine’s fuel system. Problems like holes in the fuel tanks and fuel injector failures are observed if water removal is inadequate over long periods of time.

Kevin Costner’s Oil/Water Separator

From an article in the NYDailyNews.com

Kevin Costner hopes his invention can make the oil spill saga have a Hollywood ending.

The “Field of Dreams” actor called his oil separator a “life preserver,” saying that his device can help clean up the Gulf and that it’s not too late to put it into action.

Costner told ABC’s Sam Champion on “Good Morning America” that BP has already purchased 32 of the machines.

“I’m not on a white horse,” Costner said. “I’m not the savior to this thing. But I’m kind of saying, like, I got a life preserver.”

The device, which is designed to be brought to the spill site on barges, can separate 99% of oil from water and recycle up to 2,000 barrels per day. Costner spent 15 years and $20 million of his own money to develop the machine.

“If 20 of my V20s would have been at the Exxon Valdez, 90 percent of that oil would have been cleaned up within the week,” Costner said.

The “Dances with Wolves” and “Waterworld” star said he got the idea to develop the centrifuge while watching the Exxon-Valdez spill in 1989.

“… [W]hat happened is as a young man, as a boy, I would see these things, these images, and I could tell my parents would stop and look at the TV,” he said. “And when you’re young, you look at them and you go, ‘Something stopped them.’ And what stopped them was these images.

“So I looked at those images myself and it was rubber boots. And it was straw. And it was pitch forks. And then I looked at it again ten years later and I wasn’t a boy anymore. And I’m looking at it. And now I’m going, the same images, the oil coming up like pudding and people again on beaches with rubber boots and straw.”

BP tested a version of Costner’s device earlier this year, but the test failed after the machine gave the oil a peanut butter-like consistency. That problem has since been fixed, and BP is retesting the machine now in the hopes of getting it to the Gulf soon.

Despite the fact that the oil has reached the shores of MississippiLouisiana, and Alabama, Costner is confident that his oil separator can step in and make an immediate impact on the clean-up process.

“That oil’s going to keep coming towards those people,” Costner said. “That well has not stopped. So we have to be out at the source, sucking it up on some major, I mean, we have to treat it a little bit like a war. We mustered logistically everything we had to get the Beaches of Normandy. We have to muster everything we can to keep it from hitting our beaches.

And the actor hopes that the machine can help prevent large-scale incidents like this from occurring in the future.

“… [W]e know accidents are going to happen, “Costner said. “But if we’re going to operate on our high seas, we have to have– we have to have this equipment there and … it should be able to operate the minute the oil comes into contact with water.”

Algae-X FAQs: What is the “Stuff” That Clogs My Filters?

Filter plugging can have several causes. For example, low temperatures can cause wax crystallization, which can lead to filter plugging. An example would be using summer diesel in cold weather. Wax or paraffin is part of the diesel fuel. ALGAE-X® AFC 805 Winter Fuel Catalyst with Anti Gel is the answer to that problem.

Chemical incompatibility may cause dramatic filter plugging. This may happen when fuels with incompatible additive packages are mixed.

Contaminant build up resulting from excessive microbial growth and bio-degradation of fuel can cause filter plugging. Micro-organisms, bacteria and enzyme activity, fungus, yeast and mold cause fuel degradation and the formation of waste products. The process is similar to milk turning into cottage cheese, a different form of milk. Of all the microbial debris and waste products in the tank only about .01% is bugs. Even though microbes may cause and accelerate the process of fuel degradation, it should be clear that the waste products clogging your filter are not the microbes but fuel components which have formed solids.

Frequently, the application of a biocide aggravates the situation and turns bio-film into solids, creating a real fuel filter nightmare. Bio film develops through out the entire fuel system. It grows in the water fuel interface and on the walls, baffles, and bottoms of storage tanks. An unlucky end user may be filling up his tank and getting this debris delivered as a part of his fuel, for the same price as the fuel.

Filter clogging fuel particulates Poor thermal fuel stability can plug filters. Fuel will form particulates (solids) when exposed to pumps and the hot surfaces and pressure of the fuel injection system. This will result in an increase in asphaltene agglomerations, polymerization and a dramatic loss of combustion efficiency.

Fuel systems, in general, are designed to return a significant proportion of the fuel, not used for combustion, back to the tank. This return fuel is very hot and will promote polymerization and fuel breakdown. Eventually, more and more solids from the tank will reach the filter and over time, plug the filter. These problems continuously occur in commercially operated engines, such as trucks, heavy equipment, shipping, and power generation, but will also appear in recreational boats, RV’s and all types of fuel storage tanks.

Truck engines are used continuously and, in most cases, the tanks “appear to be clean”. However, a 2-micron filter element does not last very long, in general 15,000 miles or less. It should be 30,000 miles or more. In the marine industry 400 hours is in many instances SOP while filters should easily last 1000 hours or more.

The size of the largest diesel fuel molecule still within specs is approx. 30 Angstrom (that equals approx 0,003 of a micron). Compared to a 10-micron opening in a filter element, one can have 3333 of these particular molecules passing through the opening side by side. E.g. comparing the size of a baseball to two and a half football fields.

Short filter life is quite remarkable realizing how “thin” diesel fuel actually is and knowing how clean the tanks on most trucks “appear” to be.

Short filter life is symptomatic of polymerization, increase in the size of the fuel droplet, agglomeration of asphaltenes and the formation solids in fuel systems. The consequences are carbon build up in engines and exhaust systems, higher fuel consumption and excessive smoke.
